Why Pails and Fires?

So why “Pails and Fires”?

I came up with my blog name after that famous saying about education: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

That pretty much sums up my philosophy of education. An educator’s job is not to stand before students, imparting his/her wisdom on the class as they are passively “filled.” Rather, it is the educator’s job to tend the love of learning, the spark, that is already present in each child.

But the more that I think about it, the pails and fires thing really applies to parenting as well. The more time that passes, the more I see that my job as a parent is not to “fill up” my kids with my knowledge or perceptions or beliefs. It’s about respecting them as individuals and allowing them to flourish and grow into who they are, not who I think they should be.

And really it could be way less metaphorical than that and just be that you’re going to need to keep some pails handy to put out the literal fires your kids set throughout the child-rearing years.

That. It’s totally that.
